Application Guide

A six-step overview of applying for VA benefits, plus a document checklist you can save.

Six steps to apply

  1. 1

    Determine Eligibility

Review each program's eligibility rules on VA.gov. Use the Benefits Finder for a quick overview.

  2. 2

    Gather Documents

Collect DD 214, service treatment records, medical records, and family documents.

  3. 3

    Submit Your Application

Apply online at VA.gov, by mail, in person, or with a VA-accredited representative.

  4. 4

    Track Your Claim

Sign in to VA.gov to see status updates and requests for additional evidence.

  5. 5

    Receive the Decision

VA sends a written decision. Read it carefully to see what was granted and what wasn't.

  6. 6

    Appeal if Needed

Options include Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review, or a Board Appeal within one year.
