Everything You Need to Join the Military

A complete checklist of documents, requirements, and steps. Bring these to your recruiter meeting to move faster through the enlistment process.

Requirements vary by branch and may change. Final eligibility is determined by the appropriate military service, recruiter, and MEPS.
Documents to bring
  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport)
  • Social Security card
  • Certified birth certificate
  • High school diploma, transcripts, or GED certificate
  • College transcripts (if applicable)
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident Card (green card)
  • Marriage certificate and divorce decrees (if applicable)
  • Birth certificates for any dependents
Basic eligibility requirements
  • Age between 17 and 39 (varies by branch; parental consent required at 17)
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • High school diploma or GED (diploma strongly preferred)
  • Pass the ASVAB with a qualifying AFQT score for your branch
  • Pass the MEPS medical examination
  • Pass a background check
Medical & health records
  • List of all current medications (prescription and over-the-counter)
  • Records for any past surgeries, hospitalizations, or serious injuries
  • Records for asthma, ADHD, mental health, or chronic conditions
  • Corrective lens prescription (glasses or contacts)
  • Immunization / vaccination records
  • Dental records (if you have known issues)
Physical readiness
  • Meet the height and weight standards for your branch
  • Be able to pass a basic fitness test (push-ups, sit-ups, run)
  • No disqualifying tattoos on the face, neck, or hands (branch-specific)
Legal history
  • Court records for any arrests, charges, or convictions (even if dismissed)
  • Traffic citations and any DUI/DWI records
  • Documentation for any juvenile offenses
  • Disclose all drug use honestly — lying is disqualifying
Family & dependents
  • Marital status documentation
  • Custody paperwork for any dependent children
  • Financial responsibility documentation (child support, etc.)
Steps to enlist
  • 1. Meet with a recruiter from your branch of interest
  • 2. Take the ASVAB test
  • 3. Complete the MEPS physical and background screening
  • 4. Choose your job (MOS/AFSC/rating) and sign your enlistment contract
  • 5. Ship to Basic Training
